Spin Bowling

Part 3 - Skills Training Measures

This article aims to provide you with a summary list of skills required for good spin bowling, coupled with certain measures which may help you achieve these required skills.

1. Bowl an exact line and length when required

Measure: Bowling of six balls in a pre-determined landing or drop zone

2. Vary line and length exactly

Measure: Bowling of six balls in sequence in a pre-determined landing or drop zone.

3. Bowl in a pace range of about 80-95km/hr

Measure: Speed gun measurement or coach assessment.

4. Vary the pace as required

Measure: Speed gun measurement or coach assessment of pace varied deliveries.

5. Move the ball two ways as required

Measure: Ability to bowl these delivieries on request.

6. Heavy overspin

Measure: Amount of descending drop of delivery in the last 4 metres of flight. A carefully positioned rope and drop zone could be set up as to only allow a ball with heavy overspin to carry over the rope and land in the dropzone.

7. Understand flight

Measure: Ask player to discuss and draw a diagram which depicts the flight pathway.

8. Vary flight as required

Measure: The ability to bowl the ball over the rope and under the rope whilst allowing it to land in the desired drop zone.

9. Use the bowling crease

Measure: Mark a pre-determined position on the bowling crease and have the bowler bowl from this point. Measure the number of satisfactory deliveries the bowler bowls from this position from six bowls. Have a total of 3 pre-determined positions that you can vary between.

10. Understand the use of the bowling crease

Measure: Ask the player to discuss and draw a diagram which depicts the various positions on the bowling crease that the ball can be released from, making note of their individual impacts on the balls trajectory and angle of spin.

11. Bowl around the wicket (see point 9.)

12. Read a players strengths and weaknesses

Measure: Video assessment of players technique which is assessed by a coach and a player. Follow up this evaluation with a net session with both player and coach.

13. Able to combine deliveries at will

Measure: Pre-determined sequence of deliveries set by a coach. The bowler must bowl these deliveries whilst taking into account their position on bowling crease, flight, pace, and drop zone.

14. Understand field placement in relation to strategies, the batsman

and game context.

Measure: Player able to visualise in their mind, and on request by coach, describe the field that they would set when bowling.
